Astros Win A Wild One

The Houston Astros got a rare victory last evening over the Washington Nationals thanks to a two out walk off base hit by Lance Berkman. The Astros had leads the entire game that they were unable to hold, thanks to some shoddy defense and relief pitching. Matt Lindstrom blew a save opportunity for the Astros in the top of the 9th and Nationals closer Matt Capps blew a save in the bottom of the 9th. The win for the Astros, just their 18th of the year, also showed why they have struggled so much this season. The Astros had 2 costly errors that led to go ahead runs and they surrendered seven walks.

Despite the win last night, the Astros continue to struggle. In recent days, there has been speculation that Roy Oswalt has requested a trade to a contender. This may be the time for the Astros to blow this thing up and start over. Their farm system is one of the worst in baseball, and trading guys like Oswalt and Berkman would give them a chance to jump start their rebuild. The Astros could get 3 high level prospects for both Berkman and Oswalt as contending teams are always looking for power and starting pitching. I would expect to see Oswalt dealt in the next few weeks to a team like the Dodgers or surprising Nationals, who are in the mix in the NL East and have prospects and money available to take on Oswalts big contract.

Berkman calls players-only meeting

Lance Berkman, the longest-tenured member of the Astros, called a players-only meeting prior to Thursday’s game against the Cardinals to remind his teammates to keep playing hard over the final 36 games of the season.

Berkman and Roy Oswalt were among several players who addressed the team during the meeting, which came about 12 hours after Oswalt told reporters following Wednesday’s loss to the Cardinals — Houston’s third in a row — the Astros were playing with “no fire” and there was a “dead atmosphere.”
